When you are booking a private day trip in The Bahamas from the other side of the world, the hardest thing to judge is rarely the price. It is something more basic: is the company on the other end of the message actually here?
That question is more answerable than it looks. Where the staff live. Whether the boats are owned or brokered. Whether the vehicles carry Bahamian commercial licensing and passenger liability insurance. Who handles it when the weather turns. Those are all checkable, and they tell you more than any paragraph about passion for the islands.
So this page is not a story. It is the operational detail, written out.

What MELA TRAVEL actually is
MELA TRAVEL LTD is a Destination Management Company (DMC) founded in Nassau, The Bahamas in 2015.
In 2018 the company registered a US entity in New York. That entity exists for international partnership agreements and cross-border payments. The operating company, the staff, the vehicles and the vessels are all in The Bahamas.
Put plainly: this is a Bahamas-based and Bahamas-operated DMC with a US support entity — not a US agency that sells Bahamas trips and then hands guests over to a local supplier.
One distinction worth stating clearly: the New York entity is a company registration, not a licence and not a credential. What constitutes the permission to operate is the Bahamian DMC licence held locally.
That structural difference sounds like paperwork until something goes wrong on the day. Then it becomes a question of how many parties sit between you and the boat, and who can actually redirect local resources.
For a destination company, most of this only gets settled by time. A line I keep coming back to:
Time is the best answer a destination management company can give. — Mica
Where the people are
The most direct test of whether a destination company is genuinely on the ground is whether it has resident staff.
The current Bahamas headcount:
| Role | Number | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Resident guides | 5 (3 Chinese-speaking, 2 English-speaking) | Nassau, on-island year-round |
| Full-time drivers | 3 | Nassau |
| Licensed local captains | 3 | Exuma waters |
| Resident drivers | 2 | North Eleuthera and Harbour Island |
| Emergency coordinators | 2 | Harbour Island |
The last row is the one that deserves a sentence of its own. The emergency coordinators are a permanent posting, not someone dispatched from Nassau after a problem starts.
Most days this makes no visible difference at all. It matters on the days with a delayed flight, a change in sea state, a rescheduled boat, or a guest on an out island who needs something sorted in the next hour.

Boats, vehicles, aircraft — what is owned and what is not
Stated directly.
Boats: owned
The owned fleet operating in Exuma waters is 8 vessels: 2 twelve-seat speedboats and 6 eight-seat shallow-draft boats.
The shallow draft is not a styling choice. Many of Exuma's sandbars and shallow zones shift with the tide, and shallow-draft hulls are what make those areas workable in practice.
Vehicles and vessels: commercially operated
Vehicles and vessels carry Bahamian commercial operating licences and are covered by commercial passenger liability insurance.
Aircraft: not owned
No hedging on this one. MELA TRAVEL does not own aircraft.
Flight segments are flown by a long-standing Bahamian private aviation partner. MELA TRAVEL handles the scheduling, the ground connections either side, and the coordination when weather forces a change.
That partner offers two flight formats. The first is daily scheduled service, which across all scheduled departures amounts to 19 seats per day in total. The second is a whole-aircraft charter, where departure and return times are chosen around the itinerary; the aircraft types that can currently be coordinated are 9, 15 and 19 seats.
Which is why the real scarcity in high season is usually not whether an aircraft exists. It is whether the capacity you want still exists at the time you want it.
What we do
The core business is not complicated.
Private Exuma day tours
Departing Nassau, combining a flight with a private boat charter into the Exuma Cays. Routes cover Big Major Cay (Pig Beach) and other established Exuma stops.
Pink Sands Beach day tours
Nassau to North Eleuthera, then across to Harbour Island and the pink sand.
Bahamas DMC and ground handling
Primarily for Chinese travel agencies, luxury travel advisors and international wholesalers: ground handling, group transport, custom itineraries, corporate incentive travel, multi-generational family groups and VIP support.
Alongside that, inter-island private charter coordination and bespoke private itineraries.
The current service area is Nassau, Exuma, North Eleuthera and Harbour Island, with private charter coordination extending to other Bahamian islands. Service languages are Chinese and English, with a live Chinese-language concierge available during itineraries.
Why the Pink Sands trip flies
Worth explaining one product decision here, because it is the one guests most often question.
Nassau to Harbour Island by public ferry runs roughly 3 hours each way — close to 6 hours round trip. That is a large share of a single day spent in transit, across open water, with a meaningful increase in seasickness risk.
The less-discussed problem is arrival time. The ferry typically puts visitors on Harbour Island around midday, and midday is not when the pink sand looks its best — overhead light flattens the colour that people came to see.
So the itinerary flies to North Eleuthera Airport (ELH), about 20 minutes, and continues to Harbour Island from there. The point is not to make the transport more luxurious. It is two practical things: keep the hours on the island rather than on the water, and arrive while the morning light still carries the pink.
The saved transit time is also what leaves room in a single day for the Glass Window Bridge — one of Eleuthera's most distinctive pieces of geography, where a narrow strip of land separates the deep Atlantic on one side from calm shallow water on the other, in two visibly different colours.
Seen that way, the flight is not an upgrade attached to the Pink Sands trip. It is part of how the product is designed.
Three things that have not changed
1. Private departures only, no shared groups
The boat and the day belong to one party. Which stops, and how long at each, can be adjusted around the conditions and the guests' preferences on the day.
2. Minimum two guests
No group to join, and no per-person price tiers based on headcount.
3. One price all year, no high-season surcharge
Spring break, Thanksgiving and Christmas run on the same price structure as any other week.
There is a point here that gets misread often: no surcharge does not mean space is always available.
The number of boats is fixed. The number of licensed captains is fixed. Scheduled flights total 19 seats a day. None of that expands because it is December. In high season the constraint is capacity, not price.
For high season, plan at least a month ahead. August through October is Atlantic hurricane season, so leave more flexibility in the flights either side of the trip.
Published starting prices are on each product page. Actual quotes and confirmation details are governed by the written confirmation issued by our team.
What happens when the weather changes
This is the most practical question in Bahamas travel, and the one that deserves more than a line saying the cancellation policy is strict.
Airline unable to operate due to severe weather
Free reschedule.
The Nassau team monitors marine and aviation weather continuously and stays in direct contact with the captains and the aviation partner. Where a call can be made in advance, we make it in advance rather than on the morning of departure.
Reschedule for personal reasons
The standard terms:
- Change request must be submitted at least 48 hours in advance
- Air ticket value is returned as credits under the airline's rules
- Credits can be rebooked within one year by a passenger of the same name
- Boat charges and service fees are refunded in full
The return and use of airline credits follows the carrier's policy, not a rule MELA TRAVEL sets. These are standard terms; the written confirmation issued at the time of booking governs.
Things we do not do
Writing down what a company does not do is often more useful than a longer service list.
No shared-group departures
There is no shared-boat product, and we will not put unacquainted guests on the same boat to fill it.
No professional photography service
If guests bring their own equipment, the captain can take a few shots when conditions allow. That is assistance, not a photography service, and no guarantee is made about the results.
Cruise passengers usually cannot make the Exuma day tour work
Not a policy against cruise guests — a timing problem.
Cruise ships dock in Nassau and disembarkation typically runs into the morning, by which point the Exuma day tour's window has already begun. Without a separately arranged private charter, a complete same-day itinerary is difficult to guarantee.
If there are only a few hours ashore in Nassau, a Nassau-area swimming pig experience is the more realistic choice. But the distinction matters: the pigs near Nassau are not Big Major Cay in the Exumas.
We are not an outbound tour operator
We do not package and sell flights, hotels and group products in the traditional sense. What we are good at is the part that begins when guests land in The Bahamas.
About the founder
Xihang (Mica) Li, Founder & CEO. Bachelor's degree in clinical medicine, master's in tourism management.
Holds Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and industry certifications including the Bahamas Specialist Diploma, Dive Specialist, MICE & Group Travel Specialist and Romance Specialist. Also holds Advanced Open Water certification, with technical cave diving experience.
The diving is not on this page as a decorative line on a résumé. A large share of Bahamas travel happens on or under the water, and the relationship between snorkelling sites, underwater caves, tides, currents and weather is something that gets used in product design and daily operations.
Has travelled in depth through 51 countries to date.
The original intention behind founding MELA TRAVEL has not shifted: build a genuinely locally rooted destination management company in The Bahamas, connecting luxury private travel with dependable on-the-ground operational strength.
The short version
Judging a Bahamas destination company does not require reading much marketing copy. Four things will do.
Whether the people are actually on the islands. How much of the local capacity the company controls. Whether the commercial licensing and insurance exist. And when weather or a disruption hits, who handles it and whether the terms were written down in advance.
Once those check out, the rest of the conversation is worth having.
Because once a trip actually starts, what guests need is never reassurance. It is someone local who is genuinely there.
